Thomas Hudgins, "Tom" is a contemporary expressive painter and photographer who lives and works in Bradford, Maine. A native of Mathews County, Virginia, his colorful views of the world pay homage to life, observation, human relationships, and social commentary.
From an early age, the magic of a pencil and paper has held a special place in Tom’s heart. Before he could read, the Sunday comics and televised cartoons captured his attention with shapes and bold use of color.
His father was a major artistic influence and ignited Mike’s passion for creativity. With intense fascination Mike closely observed his father as he carved animals from wood, created paintings and drawings, and built furniture. He credits his father for having taught him many fundamentals about artistic expression.
Tom currently works part-time as a professional commission and experimental artist in his studio which sits in the side yard outside his home.
He is skilled in several different mediums and art forms which include art on canvas, paper and wood, plaster sculpture, and photography. His art is found in private collections along the eastern seaboard of the U.S.
After high school, Tom served in the U.S. Army, studied computer electronics at E.C.P.I. in Hampton, Virginia, and liberal arts at Christopher Newport University. In 1996, He transferred his life to Maine and studied Studio Art at The University of Maine in Orono. At the university, he was influenced by a combination of “traditional” and “alternative” art forms, multimedia, and natural elements. In 2000, he graduated from The University of Maine in Orono with a BA in Studio Art. After graduation, he began the journey towards being a working artist who works in other industries and practices art when life affords the time.
Tom’s artwork has appeared in The Eastport Gallery, The Bangor Ireland/Maine Print Exchange 2000, Gallery 25, and locally in Bangor Maine. His photography has been exhibited at The Maine Discovery Museum and published in Gear Jammer Magazine. He continues working with his love of photography and travels as an influence for his paintings, digital photo montages, and conceptual-experimental art forms. He currently resides in Bradford Maine, with his partner Bill and two spoiled cats. He continues to observe nature and the trees. He can be found most Sunday mornings painting in his studio - The Church of the Holy Paint Brush. He is always available for commission or photo shoots.
“I have always wanted to make paintings that attract the viewer from a distance and reveal more when you look at them closer. It comes from my experience visiting museums throughout my life and my photography for source material”.
